CHIELLINI: SUAREZ BAN "EXCESSIVE"

ITALY’S Giorgio Chiellini, the player on the receiving end of Luis Suarez’s latest on-pitch indiscretion, says the Uruguayan’s punishment from FIFA was too harsh.

FIFA acted after video footage showed Suarez apparently sinking his teeth into Chiellini’s shoulder, fining him two-and-a-half days’ wages, banning him for nine international games and adding a complete ban from football for four months. That four month ban not only means he misses 13 Liverpool games, it also means he can’t even set foot inside a football stadium until the end of October.

Chiellini is more upset about Italy’s early elimination from FIFA’s World Cup in Brazil, the Azzurri following their victory over Roy Hodgson’s England with defeats to Costa Rica and Uruguay.

Suarez fit for the World Cup? Try and stop him.

WHEN Liverpool fans first heard that Luis Suarez had been injured in training for Uruguay and needed surgery the instant reaction was one of fear: Could this mean he missed a chunk of another season for the Reds? Then word came out that it was the kind of injury that takes anything from two to six weeks to recover from, meaning he’d be over it by the time he was due back for preseason at Melwood. Relief. Then the fear returned with the realisation that Uruguay might be more concerned about getting some use out of one of their most important players than about his availability for a domestic league season.

Would they rush him back too soon?

The problem is, if Suarez does make his comeback from injury a little quicker than The Reds’ medical staff back in England would like, it’ll be as much down to Luis Suarez as it will be down to the Uruguayan staff. Imagine trying to stop Luis Suarez from getting on that pitch. The boy lives to play, lives to win, if he can walk he’ll try and get on that pitch.

A look around Liverpool's Melwood training ground

AN invitation for a look around Melwood isn’t one that many Reds fans would turn down lightly and I wasn’t about to be one that did. We were here to see what those who take the club up on the offer of a tour of Liverpool FC’s famous training complex get to see.

We meet in reception before tour guide Alan Herr (@AlTourGuide on Twitter) walks us back outside and past one of the executive coaches that are going to be used take guests from Anfield to Melwood for the tour. These are the same Ellison’s Coaches used by the first team, the coaches that the players arrived on Anfield Road in before recent home games to be greeted to a sea of fans carrying flags and banners under the cover of pyro.
